Cushion Density Testing

Cushion density testing can be done in the field with a digital type scale shown below.

Since cushion density is measured in pounds per cubit foot, the thickness of the carpet needs to be measured as well.

  • Divide the thickness into one foot; for an example, half inch cushion will divide into one foot 24 times.
  • Cut a one foot square of the cushion. You can measure the cushion and trace a line using a felt pen or you can use a template.
  • Next, weight the cushion in ounces as shown above.
  • Then, convert the ounces into pounds by dividing by 16. This gives you the pound weight of the sample.
  • Now multiply the pound weight of the sample by the number you got by dividing the cushion into one foot. You now have the pound per cubit foot.
